Canada officially becomes a country. Upon confederation, the old province of Canada was divided into Ontarioand Quebec; along with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the new federation thus comprised four provinces.
The British North America Act transferred responsibility for Canada's First Peoples was transferred from the British to the Canadian government. The Canadian government now had the sole authority to negotiate treaties with the Indians, and purchase their land.
Yet, at the same time, the Canadian government was supposed to be looking after the Indians' best interests. It was a huge conflict of interest, that led to many abuses.
